A teaching on spiritual formation by Reverend Edmund Chan.

1. The Search
What do you seek?
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” – Psalm 46:10
To be still is to cease striving. To be still is to hear God. Cultivate listening to God.

2. The Struggle
What do you see?
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.” – Romans 7:14-20
You have two natures within you. The one you feed and nourish will grow stronger. The flesh will always strive against the spirit.

3. The Surrender
What do you sense?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust God with ALL your heart. Acknowledge God in ALL your ways. Surrender is not giving up. Surrender is giving in to God.

4. The Service
What do you sow?
“If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honour him.” – John 21:26
If anyone serves God, Father will honour him. If anyone serves God, he must FOLLOW Jesus, do all that you do for God not for the applause of men but for the approval of God. To be approved of God is of utmost importance. Serve God on His terms; not serve on your terms

5. The Significance
What do you strengthen?
“Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”” – John 21:22
Our identity is found in whose we are rather than who we are. Our destiny is all about what He has done for us rather than what we can do for Him. It is not the important things you do that makes your life significant, it is the significant life (that you are) that makes what you do important.
